The Ruby weighing at least 5.50 carats should be worn on Sunday if possible or at the time of Sunrise on Monday or Thursday coinciding with the star Uttaraphalguni or Uttarashadha. Bright half or Sukla paksha may be preferred. The stone should be studded in a ring of gold mixed with copper on an auspicious Sunday after purifying the stone for some time in cow's urine and fresh milk. The rays of the stone should touch the ring finger, the fourth from the thumb. Rubies with spots, cracks, holes and bluish tint are not good. Dull, pale and lusterless rubies should not be worn. A real ruby emits red rays when exposed to morning sun or immersed in the milk; shines in darkness and does not lose its weight or brilliance after rubbing on a stone. When it is heated in a bowl, it may turn green, but gets its original colour after getting cooled.

3) Kurivinda            :-   Kurivinda is as red as the eyes of the cuckoo bird

 4) Mamsagandhi     :-  Mamsagandhi is of the colour of the pigeon's blood 

 5) Neela gandhi      :-  Neelagandhi has bluish tint mixed with red and lalugandhi, looks pale with mixture of white red.

6) Lalu-gandhi.




  There is a ruby named star-ruby which contains five lines resembling a star. The colour, luster and quality of the stones vary with locality. The rubies of Burma are considered the best. These stones are found in crystals of six-sided prisms. HARDNESS AND SPECIFIC GRAVITY; 9 & 403 It is stated that the person who wears ruby suffers from ill health, distress, loss, failure or difficulties, when stone loses its colour and overcomes the trouble when it regains the colour. RUBY-SUBSTITUTES 

The following semi-precious stones can be used instead of rubies, if one cannot afford to buy costly ruby.

 1. Sun-stone - Suryakantha-mani. 2. Red-spinal - Suryamani 3. Red Tourmaline -Vikranth 4. Pyrope Garnet - Thamra

Suryakantha-Mani or Sun Stone, a sodium calcium plagioclase, reddish in colour, can be used as a substitute for Ruby. This stone is produced in Norway, Finland and Bohemia. It belongs to felspar group. Its hardness is 6 and specific gravity 2.57. It glitters like fire, when exposed to Sun. It is used in medicine for curing diseases caused by phlegm, wind and bile and for strength.

SPINEL is another substitute for Ruby. It is available in different colours with different names. Laldi-Surya-mani and Kantakij-mani are the Indians names. It is a double oxide of magnesium and aluminum. Its hardness is 8 and specific gravity is 3.6. The rose coloured spinels are popular as Balas Rubies. Ceylone, Siam and Burma produce these stones. The paste of the red spinels is used in medicines.

Tourmaline-pink and red coloured stones known as Rubellites can be used as another substitute to Ruby.

PYROPE GARNETS look like rubies and they are available in pink and dark red colours found mostly in Bohemia. The hardness is 7.5 and the specific gravity ranges from 3.7 to 3.8. The Hindi name is TAMRA. It is a magnesium aluminum garnet, known in different names like bohemian Ruby, Cape Ruby and Arigena Ruby. This is considered as the best substitute to Ruby. The powder of the Pyrope Garnet is used in Indian medicine. It stops bleeding and melts the stones formed in the kidney, urinary bladder and gall bladder. If the colour changes at any time, it is an indication of the impending danger to the wearer. If it is gifted to a friend it strengthens the ties of friendship.

The real gems are very expensive. Those who cannot afford to buy and wear the costly gems can wear semi-precious stones as substitutes as they are comparatively very cheap.
